UNDERSTANDING IP RATINGS FOR LINEAR ACTUATORS

System designers want to get the best performance and longest life from an automation device. The device must be matched to the environment to do this while keeping costs in line. The Ingress Protection or International Protection (IP) rating system offers a way to make the match. Generally, the first number in an IP rating indicates the level of protection (0-6) against solid particles. The second number is the level of protection (0-8) against liquids. Dust is present in most manufacturing environments. In many situations, the dust is dry and light. For these look for an electric or pneumatic linear actuator rated IP54. If conditions are extremely dusty (as in woodworking, machining or grinding), look for linear actuators with an IP65 rating. When it comes to wet applications there are different levels of protection to consider depending on the application. If the electric or pneumatic linear actuator will be subject to indirect water droplets or vapour, an IP65 rating is sufficient. In a case where the linear actuator will be directly in the path of water, IP66 or IP67 may be required. Environments like food processing where equipment is subject to aggressive cleaning call for an IP69K rating.
